May the sun smile on us even through the frost.

The winter solstice occurs at the instant when the Sun’s position in the sky is at its greatest angular distance on the other side of the equatorial plane as the observer. Depending on the shift of the calendar, the event of the Winter solstice occurs sometime between December 20 and 23 each year in the Northern hemisphere, and between June 20 and 23 in the Southern Hemisphere, and the winter solstice occurs during either the shortest day or the longest night of the year. Though the Winter Solstice lasts an instant, the term is also used to refer to the full 24-hour period.

We celebrate Christmas as an important family gathering like everyone else. Aside from thanksgiving, birthday and anniversary celebrations, Christmas is a very special moment for the whole family. Every year we don’t fail to do something unique for the whole family. Like my mom’s yearly new Christmas recipe, my dad’s different display of lights every holidays, and my annual anticipated gift giving ceremony.

This year, I bought Swatch watches for everyone. A steel braced, sun-brushed silver dial printed with white Arabic numerals for my mom, a subtly elegant black-in-black designed watch for my dad, round cornered and colourful lady watches for my sisters and Flick Flacks for the kids. I plan to say something about watches, like the history and some trivia about watches and clocks, after they have opened their gifts.

I thought of sending everyone something on Christmas. And that could be more beautiful than these poinsettias to fill their mind with joy in abundance.

The plants’ association with Christmas originated in 16th century Mexico, where legend tells of a young girl who was too poor to provide a gift for the celebration of Jesus’ birthday. The tale goes that the child was inspired by an angel to gather weeds from the roadside and place them in front of the church altar. Crimson “blossoms” supposedly sprouted from the weeds and became beautiful poinsettias. From the 17th century, Franciscan monks in Mexico included the plants in their Christmas celebrations.
